ROSACEA

Advancing Treatment Options for Rosacea

Rosacea is a chronic, relapsing inflammatory skin disease affecting an estimated 16 million Americans and as many as 415 million people worldwide. It primarily involves the central face and is characterized by recurring redness (flushing and persistent erythema), visible blood vessels (telangiectasia), and in many cases, acne-like inflammatory lesions (papules and pustules). While rosacea can affect anyone, it is most commonly seen in fair-skinned adults and is more frequently diagnosed in women, though men tend to experience more severe symptoms of the disease. Rosacea is generally classified into four subtypes: erythematotelangiectatic, papulopustular, phymatous, and ocular. Patients may experience features of more than one subtype over time, with symptoms that fluctuate between periods of flare and calm.1,2,3,4,5

The exact cause of rosacea is not fully understood. Environmental and lifestyle triggers, including sun exposure, temperature changes, stress, and certain foods or beverages, can provoke a response that drives the visible signs of the disease. Because no single mechanism fully explains the condition, and because its presentation varies so widely between patients, treatment is individualized to each person's specific symptoms, triggers, and quality-of-life needs.3,4
The burden of rosacea extends well beyond the skin. The condition is strongly associated with anxiety, embarrassment, and depression. Research has confirmed that rosacea carries a higher impact on daily life compared to acne, with more than half of patients reporting fatigue and difficulty sleeping as a result of their disease.6,7
